Welcome to Actual Landscapes

A talented team with talented leaders

Actual Landscapes has evolved from a diversity of skills provided by the individual employees. This has enabled the construction of a multi-talented and experienced team of landscape artists led by Rory Tompsett a fully qualified HND Landscape Science Principal with over 40 years of landscape based experience.

Actual Landscapes recognise that developing skills and competence at all levels requires investment in its staff. Actual Landscapes has an on-going evaluation and training programme in conjunction with the Coleg Cambria and Work Based Learning Programmes – two of the staff have won Learner of the Year awards.

The Design Team is lead by Rory Tompsett (HND Landscape Science & Design) who provide a creative, qualified and experienced team who understand client requirements and the full implications of installation techniques.

The entire process comes under one roof, reducing the dilution of the design principles that can happen when dealing with separate designers and contractors.

Our Outdoor Spaces Matter... Yesterday was World Mental Health Day, and we understand just how important having access to nature and outdoor spaces can be. There’s something about stepping outside, getting some fresh air, feeling the sun (when we’re lucky!), hearing the birds, or simply sitting somewhere surrounded by greenery that can make a difference. We’re not saying a beautiful garden can fix everything - it absolutely can’t. But having a space where you can slow down, switch off for a while, have a cuppa, potter about, or simply sit and breathe can be incredibly valuable. And that’s something we love about what we do. We’re creating spaces where people can spend time, make memories, enjoy nature and hopefully feel a little bit better for being there. Sometimes it’s the simplest things - stepping outside for five minutes, getting your hands in the soil, watching the bees, or enjoying a quiet moment in the garden - that can give you that much-needed pause. So, if you have an outdoor space, however big or small, make the most of it. It doesn’t need to be perfect. It just needs to be somewhere that feels good to you. 💚 And if you’re having a difficult time at the moment, please remember you don’t have to deal with everything on your own. Talk to someone, get outside if you can, and be kind to yourself. Nature can’t solve everything, but sometimes it can give us a little space to breathe. #Landscapers #LandscapeDesigns #LuxuryGardens #GardenMakeover #LoveYourGarden #LandscapingChester #GardenDesignCheshire #GardenDesignWirral #EnglishCountryGarden #LandscapeGoals #GardenGoals #weareapl #WorldMentalHealthDay #MentalHealthMatters #NatureAndMentalHealth #Wellbeing #ConnectWithNature

Did you know it’s World Sight Day? It got us thinking about just how much what we see, and how we experience a space, can change the way a garden makes us feel. Think about stepping outside in the morning. The sunlight catches the tops of the grasses, the leaves move gently in the breeze, and the natural stone under your feet has all those little variations in colour and texture. Then the light changes. Suddenly, a planting bed is glowing in the sun, shadows fall across the paving, water catches the sunshine and a textured wall becomes a feature in its own right. But gardens aren’t only about what we see. Sensory gardens are designed to engage all our senses - the scent of herbs and flowers, the sound of grasses moving in the wind, the feel of different textures, the taste of edible planting and, of course, the colours, shapes and movement we see around us. And you don't necessarily need a dedicated sensory garden to bring those ideas into your outdoor space…A lavender border you brush past…The sound of ornamental grasses rustling...A rough natural stone wall next to smooth paving…Herbs planted close enough to release their scent as you walk by…Planting that attracts birds, bees and butterflies. Those little details can completely change how you experience a garden and we love thinking about how a space will look and feel 0 from the view through your kitchen window to the sound, texture and movement you experience when you're actually out in it. Because a great garden is somewhere to experience. So, why not take a proper look around your garden. What catches your eye - and what would you love your garden to make you feel? #Landscapers #LandscapeDesigns #LuxuryGardens #GardenMakeover #LoveYourGarden #LandscapingChester #GardenDesignCheshire #GardenDesignWirral #EnglishCountryGarden #LandscapeGoals #GardenGoals #weareapl #WorldSightDay #BeautifulGardens #SensoryGardens #GardenDetails #LandscapeArchitecture *charges may apply, see calendly for details

Stop Buying Plants. Start Designing A Garden......

Stop Buying Plants. Start Designing A Garden... It sounds obvious, but here's something we see all the time. Someone visits a garden centre, falls in love with a plant, takes it home… Then another. And another. Before long, they've got lots of beautiful plants but no real sense of how they belong together. A great garden isn't created by having the most plants. It's created by understanding where everything belongs. Structure first. Then planting. Then the details. Because sometimes the answer isn't “What should I plant?” It’s: “What does this space actually need?” If you need help with a planting design, book a consultation today and let’s get started on your dream space* https://calendly.com/actuallandscapes #Landscapers #LandscapeDesigns #LuxuryGardens #GardenMakeover #LoveYourGarden #LandscapingChester #GardenDesignCheshire #GardenDesignWirral #EnglishCountryGarden #LandscapeGoals #GardenGoals #weareapl *charges may apply, see calendly for details

Did you Know Today is World Animal Day? And yesterday was World Habitat Day? Which got us thinking… what do those days actually mean to us? For us, it’s a reminder that our gardens aren’t just spaces for us to enjoy. They’re little habitats too. We often see birds, bees, butterflies, hedgehogs and all sorts of other wildlife making their way into gardens, and we love it. When we design a garden, we’re not just thinking about where the patio should go or what planting will look good. We’re also thinking about how we can create spaces where nature can thrive alongside us. A few carefully chosen plants, a quiet corner, natural shelter or a mix of different planting can make a surprising difference. And the best part? A wildlife-friendly garden doesn’t have to look wild. You can have a beautifully designed, carefully considered garden that still gives nature a place to call home. Because really, what’s a garden without a little bit of wildlife in it? What animals or wildlife do you regularly see in your garden? And what’s your favourite visitor? www.actuallandscapes.co.uk #Landscapers #LandscapeDesigns #LuxuryGardens #GardenMakeover #LoveYourGarden #LandscapingChester #GardenDesignCheshire #GardenDesignWirral #EnglishCountryGarden #LandscapeGoals #GardenGoals #weareapl #WorldAnimalDay #WorldHabitatDay #WildlifeGarden #WildlifeFriendlyGarden

What if You Couldn’t See Your Whole Garden from the House…? You step outside and see a pathway disappear behind planting. You follow it. Around the corner, there's a little seating area you hadn't noticed before. Beyond that, another path. Then a glimpse of water. Then a tree. Then, finally, the garden opens up. This is the art of revealing a garden rather than showing it all at once. We can use planting, walls, changes in level, pathways and carefully positioned features to create a sense of discovery. It's a little bit like walking through a landscape painting. You don't know what's around the next corner. And suddenly, a garden that may not actually be any bigger feels enormous. It's a particularly lovely approach for smaller gardens because you don't need more space. You simply need to make better use of the space you already have. We love creating gardens that give you reasons to keep exploring, because the best gardens aren't always the ones you understand immediately. They're the ones you discover. If you would like to discover something new in your garden why not book a consultation today and let’s get started on your dream space* https://calendly.com/actuallandscapes #Landscapers #LandscapeDesigns #LuxuryGardens #GardenMakeover #LoveYourGarden #LandscapingChester #GardenDesignCheshire #GardenDesignWirral #EnglishCountryGarden #LandscapeGoals #GardenGoals #weareapl #GardenDiscovery *charges may apply, see calendly for details

We Don’t Just Build Gardens… We Shine a Light on the Details… We take real pride in the finished result of our projects and that means paying attention to every single detail, even the ones you might not notice at first. Take these steps, for example. The paving has been carefully laid with clean, precise lines, while the beautiful slate cladding on the risers adds another layer of texture, colour and character. And then, when the evening comes… The lighting brings it all to life! As the light washes across the slate, it catches every little variation in the stone - bringing out the warm tones, natural texture and layers that might otherwise go unnoticed. That’s what we love about landscaping. It’s not just about putting materials together. It’s about thinking about how they will look, feel and work together at every time of day. From the paving beneath your feet to the light highlighting the stonework after dark, every last detail has a purpose. Because the difference between a good garden and a great one? Sometimes, it’s in the details. Happy World Tourism Day! 🌍 Did you know we take inspiration from all sorts of places – and a lot of that comes from simply getting out and seeing the world? Rory has been lucky enough to travel to some incredible places over the years, including Australia, where the rainforests and completely different landscapes really opened his eyes to just how much inspiration there is in the natural world. And you don't have to travel that far to find it. From the beautiful landscapes of North Wales, the gardens around Chester, to some of the amazing gardens, estates and wild spaces across the UK, there is always something that catches your eye. Sometimes it's a particular plant, the way stone has been used, or even the feeling a place gives you when walk into the space. And that's what we love about travelling – you can bring little pieces of those experiences home with you. What's your favourite place or landscape you've ever visited? And...If you could take one thing from that place and recreate it in your own garden, what would it be? Maybe it's the feeling of being surrounded by rainforest, a Mediterranean-style courtyard, a wild coastal garden, a beautiful water feature or simply a particular plant or tree that reminds you of somewhere special. It doesn't have to be a whole garden either, sometimes one little idea can completely change a space. Tell us yours in the comments. We'd love to hear where your garden inspiration comes from! The 5-Minute Garden Test… Stand at your back door. Don't walk anywhere. Just look. What do you see first? Is it the thing you love most about the garden? Or the thing you wish you couldn't see? A great garden should draw your eye towards something beautiful. It should make you curious to walk further. It should have somewhere for your eye to rest. Try it again from your kitchen window. Then from your favourite chair. What does your garden say to you in five seconds? If you’re not happy with the results of your 5-minute test, why not book a consultation today and let’s get started on your dream space* https://calendly.com/actuallandscapes #Landscapers #LandscapeDesigns #LuxuryGardens #GardenMakeover #LoveYourGarden #LandscapingChester #GardenDesignCheshire #GardenDesignWirral #EnglishCountryGarden #LandscapeGoals #GardenGoals #weareapl *charges may apply, see calendly for details

What our Customers Said

We asked Rory and his team to give us something a little different. Rory listened to what we wanted and came up with an inspired design. Then he became our project manager as his team turned design into reality. A great bunch of guys. Friendly and trustworthy and they really know what they are doing! Highly recommended.

David Nolan Spilsbury

Absolutely delighted with the garden tranformation Rory and his team carried out for us. From the initial consultation right through to the final flag being laid I cannot fault Actual Landscapes! I found the whole team to be hard-working, professional and considerate. I would highly recommend! Thank you.

Catherine Dodd

From initial consultation to finished article I cannot fault Rory and the lads from Actual Landscapes. We started off with 4 concepts which we then tweaked and fine tuned to find the perfect garden and it was executed to a really high standard. The team who created my garden (shout out to Steve, Sam and Mike) were a pleasure to deal with and my neighbours actually miss having them around! I am so chuffed with my new garden, it went from dried out wilderness to lush green haven in a matter of weeks and I now have a perfect spot to chill out on sunny days. The cats love it too!

Elly Wallis

We requested something a bit different, in that we wanted a garden with Japanese themes. Rory listened really carefully and took that forward, creating a design that he then put into play with real enthusiasm and inspiration.

The team were fantastic- so friendly, incredibly hardworking, and conscientious. They were also very thoughtful when dealing with our neighbours, which we really appreciated.

The result couldn’t have delighted us more- we are so thrilled and look forward to seeing the garden settle in and grow as the years go by. It’s a wonderful space for our family.

We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend and however big or small your project, you are bound to be very happy!

Katherine Nolan

We would like to thank Rory and his team – Steve, Sam, Mikee, Callum and George – for the work done to transform our tired and unfriendly back garden into one we can be proud of and able to enjoy.

From the design stage to the final jet wash the job has been carried out extremely professionally and we are so happy with the end results.

We would wholeheartedly recommend Actual Landscapes for any landscaping project.

Actual Landscapes are superb. I had the front of my property redesigned by Rory and the team and I was blown away by the forward-thinking designs and practical ideas. The result was stunning and I can’t recommend them highly enough. The installation team were extremely accommodating, polite and hard working.
